Participating Lions clubs have selected and purchased books from the two book lists made available to them and presented them to their town library(s) between Nov. 15 and Jan 15, culminating on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's birthday and with this reading of two stories by Bloomfield Lions Club members.

The Lions Clubs in District 23B serve the Hartford and Litchfield counties.  There are 54 clubs and nearly every town or city in these counties have a Lions club.  Lions clubs exist to serve.  Among their many and varied service projects, they have developed a book drive initiative that undergirds the Public Act 19-12, An Act Concerning the Inclusion of African American & Latino Studies in the Public School Curriculum.

The purpose of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr book drive was to collect new books with African American or Latino themes written by African American or Latino authors for middle school, elementary and pre-K students.
