Event Details

Want to learn more about social justice, but don’t know where to start? Join us at BPL’s Social Justice Book Club, now in its second year! Meeting monthly on the fourth Tuesday of the month, this group will seek to create a brave space for learning and sharing a variety of perspectives. For September, we will amplify Latinx voices by discussing Once I Was You by Maria Hinojosa.

In this honest memoir, award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa shares her experience growing up Mexican American on the South Side of Chicago. She offers a personal account of how the narrative around immigration has informed American attitudes toward outsiders, and how it has come at the expense of our country’s most vulnerable populations—leaving us with the broken system we have today. An urgent call to fellow Americans to open their eyes to the immigration crisis and understand that it affects us all.
