Event Details

Want to learn more about social justice, but don’t know where to start? Join us at BPL’s Social Justice Book Club, now in its second year! Meeting monthly on the fourth Tuesday of the month, this group will seek to create a brave space for learning and sharing a variety of perspectives. To celebrate Native American Heritage Month, our November book will be There There by Tommy Orange.

The novel follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize. Among them is Jacquie Red Feather, newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind. Dene Oxendene, pulling his life together after his uncle’s death and working at the powwow to honor his memory. Fourteen-year-old Orvil, coming to perform traditional dance for the very first time. The voices tell a story of the plight of Native Americans, struggling with a painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, with communion and sacrifice and heroism.

Please call Prosser or McMahon Wintonbury to reserve your FREE copy of the book (available while supplies last). You must provide your email address at registration to receive the Zoom link. Your Registration Confirmation Notice includes the Zoom link for the program. All participants will start with video off and sound muted. No computer/internet at home?
