Pathways to Publication
People often write poems in order to sort through their feelings
or express a personal truth, and at times, just writing things down is enough.
Sometimes poets write to mark special occasions or milestones, to celebrate or
mourn family members or friends. However, much of poetry is meant to be shared
with a wider audience. How does one go about getting poems published? In this
workshop we’ll concentrate mainly on a discussion of the publication of
individual poems, but also examine the possibilities of chapbooks and
full-length collections: how to submit your work, where to submit, and what to
include.
Ginny Lowe Connors, a
retired English teacher, is the author of several poetry
collections, including Toward the Hanging Tree: Poems of Salem
Village (Antrim House, 2017), as well as The Unparalleled
Beauty of a Crooked Line and Barbarians in the Kitchen. Her
chapbook, Under the Porch, won the Sunken Garden Poetry Prize
and she has earned numerous awards for individual poems. Connors holds an MFA
in poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She is a former poet laureate of
West Hartford. As publisher of her own press, Grayson Books, Connors has also
edited a number of poetry anthologies, including Forgotten Women: A
Tribute in Poetry. A Board Member of the Connecticut Poetry Society, she is
co-editor of Connecticut River Review. Connors writes a column for
the Hartford Courant: CT Poets’ Corner.
