Have you been hearing about racial and social justice, and want to learn more? Whether you are just getting started, or have been doing the work for decades, we hope you can join us at BPL’s Social Justice Book Club. Meeting monthly on the last Tuesday of the month, this group will seek to create a brave space for learning and sharing a variety of perspectives.
To celebrate PRIDE Month, our June book will be Black lesbian poet and feminist writer Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider. In this collection of fifteen essays and speeches, Lorde takes on sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia, and class, and presents the topic of social difference as a vehicle for action and change. Her words reflect struggle but ultimately, offer messages of hope, making us more intelligent and aware after reading them.
We will focus on these essays:
The Transformation of Silence Into Language and Action
Scratching the Surface
The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House
Age, Race, Class, and Sex
The Uses of Anger
Learning From the 60s
Eye to Eye
